Crawley YBC: Coaching Charter

The mission of the Crawley YBC coaching programme is to enable every bowler to reach their desired potential, while enjoying the journey of learning, improving, and competing in ten-pin bowling.

We aim to create an environment that is supportive, consistent, and focused on long-term development, helping young athletes grow in confidence, independence, and skill, both on and off the lanes.

Our Coaching Approach

Led by the senior coaches, the Crawley YBC coaching team works collaboratively to identify, record, and regularly review each athlete’s key area of focus. This is the single skill, habit, or understanding that will have the greatest positive impact on the bowler at their current stage of development. Where appropriate, up to two secondary focuses may also be identified, provided they do not detract from the primary focus.

All coaches have access to this shared information and are encouraged to add notes, observations, and feedback. This creates a shared “coaching clipboard” that ensures:

  • A consistent coaching message across the team

  • Clear understanding of each bowler’s current goals

  • Any coach can step in and support any athlete effectively

This joined-up approach minimises confusion and allows bowlers to receive clear, aligned guidance at all times.

How Club Sessions Are Delivered

During Saturday club sessions, senior coaches will move throughout the club, identifying and reviewing key focuses across the group. Other coaches will work with small groups of bowlers, typically on a single pair of lanes, reinforcing individual focuses and helping skills become confident and natural through repetition.

Once a month, Crawley YBC will run a training-focused session, giving bowlers the choice to prioritise practice over scoring. Bowlers who wish to focus on skill development may do so without any emphasis on scores, while those who prefer to bowl games for score may continue at one end of the lanes with minimal coaching input.

This balance supports both learning and competition, recognising that development and enjoyment do not always come from scoring alone.

Clarity of Coaching Messages

A key principle of the Crawley YBC coaching programme is consistency. All technical instruction during club sessions is delivered by qualified Crawley YBC coaches working within a shared coaching framework. This ensures that each bowler receives clear, appropriate guidance that reflects their individual focus and stage of development.

To avoid mixed messages or confusion for young bowlers, technical coaching from outside the coaching team is not part of club sessions. Guidance for parents, grandparents, and guardians on how best to support their child is set out in the Crawley YBC Parents & Supporters Charter.

Our Commitment

Through clear communication, shared responsibility, and consistent coaching, Crawley YBC is committed to providing a safe, focused, and positive environment where every bowler feels supported, challenged, and motivated to improve.

This charter exists to guide our coaching team, protect our athletes, and ensure the highest possible standard of development for all bowlers at Crawley YBC.
